Fully Rugged Laptops
Fully rugged computers have been designed from the ground up for use in outdoor, dusty or mobile conditions. Every component, and even the placement of those components, has been carefully considered. Fully rugged computers can handle a spray of water from any direction due to their “sealed nature”. This sealing also keeps out dust, dirt, sand, salt, moisture, heat and cold. Also, rugged computers often come with display screens that can be viewed in outdoor lighting conditions.

Rugged Tablet PCs
A Tablet PC is different from a laptop in two primary ways. One, they do not have a built-in keyboard; they always have a touch-screen display for input and moving the cursor. And secondly, they do not have a built-in media drive such as a floppy, CD or DVD drive. Tablet PCs are designed to be lightweight and carried in one hand. They are thus easier to use and handle than a laptop which normally requires a surface to set the computer down while in use.

Semi-Rugged Laptops
These products are typically commercial computers, with standard, off-the-shelf components, that have been purposely and significantly enhanced for rugged use. This ruggedization normally entails a magnesium case, a shock or gel-mounted hard disk drive and a spill-proof keyboard.

Business Rugged Laptops
Business Rugged Laptops are designed for road-warriors, but not necessarily for in-field, in-vehicle, or outdoor use. They have shock-mounted hard disk drives and magnesium casings, but are not sealed against the elements and can only handle a drop of 18 inches or less.

Car Computers, also known as Vehicle rugged laptops are built to handle the types of vibrations that computers experience when mounted in a vehicle. The hard drive is shock-mounted and there are other ruggedization features that enable the computer to work flawlessly even when driving over dirt or extremely bumpy roads. Vehicle rugged computers may or not be sealed against the outdoor elements, as this is generally not a requirement for vehicle-mounted computers.

UMPC's & Handhelds
UMPC’s are used like Tablet PC's but they are even smaller & lighter. The smallest Tablet PC has an 8.4" display, whereas a UMPC has a 4-5" display. A UMPC differs from a Handheld PC or a PDA because it can run full-blown Windows operating system, not a scaled down version. Rugged handheld PC’s are even smaller than a UMPC & typically run Windows Mobile & are almost always completely sealed against the outdoor elements & dusty conditions & can handle being dropped from a height of 4 feet or less
